WHAT IT COSTS
The cheapest way to digitise a publication is to create a Flash page-turner. We create very high-quality digital editions using a system built by a third party company which we use in-house. This is also available for clients to use directly and we can assist with install, training and provide support services.
If we digitise we will charge based up on:
- The number of pages in the publication.
- The frequency with which the publication is produced.
- The overall volume of pages a publisher provides in a year.
- The complexity of the publication.
When we give a quote we are trying to estimate how much time we think creating your digital edition will cost us. Human production time is our biggest fixed cost. A second cost is the licence fee we pay to software providers to use their system which is paid on a per issue fee. This makes it particularly cost-effective for large publications and books.
Finally, we will work out a fee to host and deliver a publication, or provide it to you to self-host if that is a requirement.
The second system we use is XML-based and is used to segment a publication down to article level. From the publication we create code and then use the code to create a number of output channels which include:
- A Flash, or HTML, digital magazine or newspaper.
- Raw XML, HTML or plain text.
- Re-formatted XML to create feeds for mobile or e-reader devices, for example.
- A complex digital archive.
This software is typically licenced on a per page fee and because of technical and licence restrictions we are not able to provide it to clients for their use in-house.
