AUTHENTICATION

Being able to control access to publications is essential. We have developed a flexible but secure method for restricting access to publications.

The process of authentication relies on browser cookies and MD5 encryption to validate a user’s credentials and allow or deny access to publications.

Globally Unique Identifiers (GUID’s)
A GUID is a link which is made unique by the addition of a 32-bit randomly generated character string, for example: c4de8ed8-2a93-4990-931b-4c8daf423785

When this is added to the URL it creates a unique link.

    http://www.digitalpublishingcompany.co.uk/authentication/authcode.aspx?guid=c4de8ed8-2a93-4990-931b-4c8daf423785

Each link will only allow one user entry to the publication. Once the GUID has been consumed, a cookie is dropped on the browser. Once the cookie is dropped the link will only work on a browser with the relevant cookie present. Users without the cookie present will be redirected to a generic error page.

The publisher has access to an administration interface allowing them to generate at will as many unique links as they require for each mail-out. This is also an ideal way to send out marketing and promotional editions as only the intended recipient can see the publication.

Static IP address
Large organisations often have a unique outgoing IP address from a specific location. We can lock the publication down to only allow views from defined IP addresses. The IP address can be used simultaneously with other authentication mechanisms.

Log-in
User will be required to authenticate using specified user credentials—typically a username and a password. If the credentials check out the user will be allowed to view the publication, if not the user will be redirected to a generic error page.

Subscription management systems
We have developed a web-based subscription management system to allow publishers to manage new subscriptions and renewals to digital editions.

Functionality includes a customer-area in which customers can pause a subscription, alter an email address or change their password.

The administration interface enables the publisher to lookup subscriber information, manage records and also features reporting tools to assist in determining the success of the publication.

E-commerce integration
Bespoke development and implementation of various payment gateways can be used to build a ecommerce solution. The Banking/Payment gateway interface will be standalone, and will the issue a GUID if the user’s payment was successful. The ecommerce solution can also feed into a third party subscription management applications. Bespoke development will be required to integrate the subscription management system with the olive authentication methods.
